Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus set foot in the "New World" on October 12, 1492. In the United States, the holiday is officially observed on the second Monday in October. Italian-Americans observe the date as a celebration of Italian American heritage, however in recent years the holiday has become controversial since, for indigenous people, the arrival of Columbus is not a day to be celebrated.
